"I would have loved to come up with Twitter, who wouldn't? But I don't know anything about that and so I'm doing what I know how to do and that's make clothes for people who enjoy the outdoors." - Stephen Sullivan, founder and CEO of Stio.

You might be surprised how many businesses are started in an industry which the founder knows very little about. When you ask an entrepreneur about their experience prior to starting their company, chances are they will fall into one of three categories.

Successful entrepreneurs build companies in industries they understand. About one-third of the entrepreneurs we have interviewed worked in the industry in which they started their business. Another third worked in a related industry. The remaining third were serious and frequent consumers of the products, so they understood the industry from the customer’s perspective. This episode reviews these three areas of experience and shows how the more you know about your industry, the greater your chances for success.
